An-Ting & Ian Gallagher on developing Lost Communications: Underwater

Join An-Ting and Ian as they go behind the scenes of an immersive audiovisual project

Collusion’s ART // TECH // PLAY video series shares insights from artists about their work with creative technologies, aiming to spark curiosity and act as an introduction for others who would like to incorporate similar techniques into their work and practice.

This video explores the development of An-Ting & Ian’s latest project Lost Communications: Underwater, supported by the Immersive Arts programme and via their Research Fellowships at Norwich University of the Arts, where they’ve been working in the Immersive Visualisation and Simulation Lab.

An-Ting (composer) and Ian Gallagher (creative technologist) are collaborators specialising in blending cutting-edge arts and technology. Their collaborations include ‘every dollar’ (2021), winner of Arts Council England’s Digital Culture Award for Storytelling, ‘HOME X’ (2023), which premiered at the Barbican with a sold-out week-long run and was nominated for the UK Theatre Awards’ Digital Innovation category and ‘Lost Communications 失絡之聲’ (2024), which have been toured extensively in the UK, Brazil, Hong Kong and Taiwan.

Individually, An-Ting’s works explore the relationships between humanity, nature, and the spiritual realm. Notion describes her as “the one-to-watch in the world of composing…”. She has presented her works in Barbican, Southbank Centre, LSO St Luke’s, King’s Place, Bristol Old Vic, and over 100 arts venues in the UK and abroad. Between 2018 and 2023, she served as artistic director of the National Portfolio Organisation Kakilang, placing emphasis on generating new narratives by East and Southeast Asian artists and encouraging cross-artform collaborations.
Ian Gallagher is a creative-technologist (PhD, Physics ) with a keen interest in the exploration of consciousness and the emergence of collective thought and behaviour. He helped found a digital agency – OH Digital – before moving to London and becoming an independent app developer and entrepreneur. He has helped to create high-profile apps for Christie’s, Formula One and the Olympics among many others, and co-founded a startup, Myriada, focused on the harnessing of collective intelligence. More recently, his work has been presented at the East Kowloon Cultural Centre, Hong Kong’s flagship Arts-Tech venue and he has become a core contributor to the generative AI open source arts community.
